EDTA Synthesis :

In the year 1935, the compound was first ever discussed by Ferdinand Munz; it was formulated by him using chloroacetic & ethylenediamine acids. Today, EDTA is synthesized from sodium cyanide, ethylenediamine (1,2-diaminoethane) & formaldehyde. The method used by Ferdinand Munz, is no longer used in commercial production. Furthermore, current method yields sodium salt, which can be converted into acid form, by following these steps:

H2NCH2CH2NH2 + 4 CH2O + 4 NaCN + 4 H2O → (NaO2CCH2)2NCH2CH2N(CH2CO2Na)2 + 4 NH3
(NaO2CCH2)2NCH2CH2N(CH2CO2Na)2 + 4 HCl → (HO2CCH2)2NCH2CH2N(CH2CO2H)2 + 4 NaCl
